== Whitespace generation ==

When this template is on a new line and is followed (or preceded) by a blank line, it creates a visible blank line. ([https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&oldid=1022059831]) Is this possible to fix? I often see this create accidental whitespace above article text when the template is placed grouped with the tags at the top of an article. — [[User:Goszei|Goszei]] ([[User_talk:Goszei|talk]]) 06:42, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
:It's not a fault of this template, but in the way that it is being used. If you use it in accordance with [[Template:Italic title#Location on page|its documentation]], there is no problem. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] &#x1f339; ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 11:16, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
:It's not the template which causes it but the newlines around the template call. The template has no rendered output at its location so your example effectively has two consecutive blank lines. That gives extra whitespace. Removing the template without removing the newline at the end of its line would give the same result. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 12:25, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
::Would adding some kind of invisible character to "trick" the parser into not treating it like a blank line fix it? I understand situations where a blank line is created are improper uses per the documentation (as Redrose64 said), but making this problem self-solvable would save many edits and entries in page history in the future that remove the whitespace when the template is used improperly. — [[User:Goszei|Goszei]] ([[User_talk:Goszei|talk]]) 20:28, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
:::No, that would exacerbate it. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] &#x1f339; ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 21:21, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
:This issue was also encountered with {{tlp|short description|none}} and I did some testing with it. It appears to be solved by adding <nowiki><nowiki /></nowiki> which shouldn't have any unintended consequences. --[[User:Trialpears|Trialpears]] ([[User talk:Trialpears|talk]]) 20:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
::If Line1 and Line2 are pure text then they would be displayed on the same line with this: <syntaxhighlight lang=moin>
Line1
{{italic title}}
Line2
</syntaxhighlight> [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 08:45, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
::{{replyto|Trialpears}} We should not be introducing fudges like {{tag|nowiki|s}} simply to handle cases where people didn't follow the documentation. This goes for {{tlx|short description}}, {{tlx|italic title}} and anything else which doesn't display text in place. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] &#x1f339; ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 21:21, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
:::Are there any negatives associated with doing so? It is common practice to have one template a line for the top matter and we can't expect every editor to be aware of an obscure detail in the documentation. Changing user behavior on a large scale is basically the hardest thing you can do and adding a <nowiki><nowiki /></nowiki> is a simple fix that can solve the issue for good everywhere. --[[User:Trialpears|Trialpears]] ([[User talk:Trialpears|talk]]) 21:32, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
::::Yes there are. If used between two boxes - such as {{tlx|proposed deletion/dated}} and {{tlx|notability}} - it will cause a gap between the two where none would otherwise have appeared. It defeats the <code>border-collapse:</code> CSS property. This is pretty much the same argument as [[Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Layout/Archive 13#Where to put &#x7b;&#x7b;short description&#x7d;&#x7d;]]. See also [[Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Layout/Archive 13#Nothing should go between navboxes and authority control]] and [[Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Layout/Archive 14#DISPLAYTITLE]]. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] &#x1f339; ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 15:06, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

We need a technical solution for making this template behave like adjacent hatnotes; expecting users to read the documentation is not realistic. [[User:Fgnievinski|fgnievinski]] ([[User talk:Fgnievinski|talk]]) 05:09, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

== Should italic title be used on redirects? ==

I'm leaning no, since the user would never really see it. But figured I'd check. :I'd lean towards yes. Minor benefit and no harm as far as I can tell. Readers won't see it but editors will. --[[User:Jameboy|Jameboy]] ([[User talk:Jameboy|talk]]) 16:54, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:If it should, then it should probably be added via {{tl|R from species to genus}} so there won't be a need to manually add it. [[User:Gonnym|Gonnym]] ([[User talk:Gonnym|talk]]) 17:08, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

==The [[Judd Legum]] article should not have its title in italics==
Can someone fix [[Judd_Legum|this]]? Thanks. [[User:Nightscream|Nightscream]] ([[User talk:Nightscream|talk]]) 03:38, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
:Appears to have already been fixed in {{diff|Judd Legum|prev|1226527364|this edit}}. --[[User:Redrose64|<span style="color:#a80000; background:#ffeeee; text-decoration:inherit">Red</span>rose64]] &#x1f339; ([[User talk:Redrose64|talk]]) 07:49, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
