=== Purpose ===
This template facilitates the citation of articles from [[Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography]]. It uses {{tl|cite encyclopedia}} in its implementation. It provides for links to the Wikisource project [[s:Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography|Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography]], but also links to other sources (for example [[Google Books]]), or no link at all can be used.

====Using <code>display</code>====
The mechanics of Wikisource will sometimes require that a link have disambiguation information which is not part of the original title. The <code>display</code> parameter allows this information to be hidden for the purpose of the citation. For example:

If text is incorporated verbatim into an article, the <code>vb</code> parameter can be used to tack on a notice appropriate to the policy in [[Wikipedia:Plagiarism]].

The first is set if the parameter <code>vb=''x''</code> is set (or the template {{tl|Appletons'}} is used), otherwise the second category is set unless the parameter <code>notaref=''x''</code> is set.

will not insert a category, though there will be no noticeable difference in the page. Examples of situations where use of these parameters should be made:
*<code>vb=''x''</code> is used to indicate that text has been copied verbatim from Appleton's Cyclopedia into a Wikipedia article.
*<code>notaref=''x''</code> can be used when the template is placed in the "External links" section and so is providing additional information and is not being used as a citation to support information in the Wikipedia article.
