Examples and usage

Suppose you want to add an external link to the IEP's article on Samuel Alexander (1859–1938) at <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">https://www.iep.utm.edu/alex-sam/</syntaxhighlight>. The <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url-id= is samuel-alexander. The last update is June 1, 2009.

Markup	Renders as
{{Cite IEP | url-id=samuel-alexander | title=Samuel Alexander (1859–1938) | first=Emily | last=Thomas | date=June 1, 2009}}	Thomas, Emily (June 1, 2009). "Samuel Alexander (1859–1938)". In Fieser, James; Dowden, Bradley (eds.). Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. ISSN 2161-0002. OCLC 37741658.
{{Cite IEP | url-id=samuel-alexander | title=Samuel Alexander (1859–1938) | short=yes}}	"Samuel Alexander (1859–1938)". Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Publication date

The IEP has not provided a publication date on article pages since about 2014. However, a publication date can sometimes be found by finding the first Internet Archive of the article, then looking through the RSS feed of the site from that date. For example, for this article:

The first archive can be found at

which redirects to

which was archived on 2015-11-18 = 18 November 2015. For articles older than 2014, original publication dates and modification dates are at the bottom of the page. Since this is more recent than 2014, clicking on the RSS feed icon in the left sidebar leads to

which includes the article under the slightly modified title "Religious Diversity, Theories of" with the following line indicating the

   <pubDate>Mon, 09 Nov 2015 06:19:53 +0000</pubDate>

So the full citation is: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{cite IEP |last=Tuggy |first=Dale |date=9 November 2015 |title=Theories of religious diversity |url-id=reli-div |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151118094015/http://www.iep.utm.edu/reli-div/ |archive-date=18 November 2015}}</syntaxhighlight>Tuggy, Dale (9 November 2015). "Theories of religious diversity". In Fieser, James; Dowden, Bradley (eds.). Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. ISSN 2161-0002. OCLC 37741658. Archived from the original on 18 November 2015.
