Usage

{{Cite ODNB|doi=ODNB doi|title=ODNB article name}}

For example, {{Cite ODNB|doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/29986|title=Worsley, Sir Richard}} displays:

"Worsley, Sir Richard". Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/ref:odnb/29986. (Subscription, Wikipedia Library access or UK public library membership required.)

List of supported parameters

This template supports all parameters that are supported by {{cite encyclopedia}}.

Several parameters have pre-set defaults (but may be overridden):

• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|encyclopedia=[[Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]]
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|edition=online
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|publisher=[[Oxford University Press]]

To override the defaults, type the parameter and a value, like {{Cite ODNB|encyclopedia=Oxford Dictionary of National Biography|edition=14th}}

Article author (for the full set of author parameters, see {{cite encyclopedia}}):

• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|first=first name of the article author, if present
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|last=last name of the article author, if present

Article titles and identification:

• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|title=name of the ODNB article
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi=doi—use where available on the ODNB page
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id=number—Use ONLY if a doi is not available. This is a nonstandard parameter and consists of the "article number" (often the last set of digits of a biography URL). Avoid if possible as it as it does not always generate the correct link
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url=URL of the ODNB article—Can be used with or in place of the parameter id=. Is essential for some ODNB non-biography articles such as "Themes" which neither have a doi nor conform to the usual ODNB url biography format.
• Example:
  • Patrick Little, ‘Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/theme/95468
  • This can be handled like this (url):

    {{Cite ODNB|first=Patrick|last=Little|title=Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)|url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/theme/95468}}

    Little, Patrick. "Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)". Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. (Subscription, Wikipedia Library access or UK public library membership required.)

  • or like this (doi):

    {{Cite ODNB|first=Patrick|last=Little|title=Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)|doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/95468}}

    Little, Patrick. "Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)". Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/ref:odnb/95468. (Subscription, Wikipedia Library access or UK public library membership required.)

  • or like this (id):

    {{Cite ODNB|first=Patrick|last=Little|title=Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)|id=95468}}

    Little, Patrick. "Major-generals (act. 1655–1657)". Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/ref:odnb/95468. (Subscription, Wikipedia Library access or UK public library membership required.)

Years and dates

• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|origyear=original year—The initial year of publication is usually 2004; if the entry has been updated, the current year parameter may be different.
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|year=year of ODNB article publication
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|date=date of ODNB article publication—Only set both date and year parameters if date is in YYYY-MM-DD format. In such cases the date parameter value is displayed but year parameter value is used by templates such as {{harvnb}}.
• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|access-date=—Not needed as the ODNB has both date of article modification, a built in archive and a doi structure; if used, requires <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url=

Some articles are freely available to the public, such as Virginia Woolf. In those cases, you can add the optional <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|freearticle= parameter.

• <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|freearticle=y

  {{Cite ODNB|id=37018|title=Woolf [née Stephen], (Adeline) Virginia|first=Lyndall|last=Gordon|freearticle=y}}

  Gordon, Lyndall. "Woolf [née Stephen], (Adeline) Virginia". Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/ref:odnb/37018.

Hidden categories

This template places articles that incorporate it into an administrative hidden category:

• Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the ODNB

Pages using both <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id= and <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi= are tracked in Category:Pages using cite ODNB with both doi and id parameters
