Template:Linktext

Template documentationviewedithistorypurge

For linking from one Wikimedia project to another (e.g. Wikipedia to Wiktionary), see Help:Interwikimedia links. For a list of interlanguage codes, see List of ISO 639-1 codes and meta:List of Wikipedias.

The Linktext template creates inline links to Wiktionary by default for each word separately to a page that matches that word, within the supplied text. Other wikis can be specified and thus interlanguage Wikipedias or interwiki links can be created.

Interlanguage links in general are links from a page in one Wikipedia in one language to a page in another Wikipedia in another language.

Usage

pref

The default target that this template links to is Wiktionary. To change the target, set the parameter <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|pref= to another sister wiki’s code (see list of sister wikis and their codes and list of Wikipedias and codes). For example, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|pref=c for Commons, or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|pref=th for Thai Wikipedia. To link to a foreign language Wiktionary, set to <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">wikt:de</syntaxhighlight> or whatever lang code.

n1, n2, n3, etc.

Use the arguments <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|n1, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|n2, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|n3, up to <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|n20, to specify words that should not be linked. Regular spaces will be removed from the beginning and end of these; if you must have spaces, use   instead.

If you want to have a delimiter, such as ", ", appear between links, specify the delimiter with <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|lim=.

You should specify the language code with <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|lang= (rationale explained here). This is not required if it is used inside a template that specifies the language, such as Template:Zh.

Note: Do not add this template everywhere. For some reason, this template is frequently used in articles containing CJK terms, but this is not recommended. Use this template only when a link to Wiktionary is really needed.

Examples

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">This is a test</syntaxhighlight>

This is a test

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">This is not a test</syntaxhighlight>

This is not a test

The following links to the German Wiktionary:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">Das Ewig-Weibliche zieht uns hinan</syntaxhighlight>

Das Ewig-Weibliche zieht uns hinan

Also can be used to wikt-link individual Chinese characters:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">雲居道膺</syntaxhighlight>

雲居道膺

Examples of result of specifying "lang" (differences in characters explained here and here):

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">雲緑</syntaxhighlight>

雲緑

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">雲緑</syntaxhighlight>

雲緑

Wiktionary link templates

Template	Alias	Explanation
Wiktionary	wikt	Makes a box.
Wiktionary pipe	wtp	Ditto. Allows a piped link.
See Wiktionary A disambiguation hatnote type. Useful if the article title is a generic name, but the content differs from it. For example, Squander is an article about a game, and this template is used to link to "squander" page in Wiktionary.
Wiktionary inline	wti	Can be used in the "External links" section, by making a one-line navigator. Not inline in the usual sense.
Wiktionary redirect	wtr	Makes a soft redirect.
Wiktionary category 2	wtc	Similar to wikt, but links to a category in Wiktionary.
Wiktionary category Ditto, more verbose type.
Linktext Turns each of consecutive words into an Wiktionary link, or any other interwiki / interlang link. Example: táłtłʼááh → táłtłʼááh adijiłii
wikt-lang Applies a language tag to a word, and links to that language's section of the Wiktionary entry on the word, much like the m and l templates on Wiktionary. For instance, en yields was, and is equivalent to en.

Moving a non-encyclopedic entry to Wiktionary:

• Transwikied to Wiktionary, : Pasted at the top of the talk page by admins.

Markup:

• wikt:ᐁᕕᖃ → wikt:ᐁᕕᖃ
• wikt:snow#Spanish → wikt:snow#Spanish (you can link to a specific language section)
• 'myxomycete' in Japanese → 'myxomycete' in Japanese (You can use a pipe as usual.)
• wikt:curcubeu → curcubeu (You can hide "wikt:" by a pipe trick.)

Wiktionary-related userboxes:

• User Wiktionary: "This user has a page on Wiktionary" box.
• User admin Wiktionary: "This user is an administrator on Wiktionary" box.
