Purpose

This template facilitates the citation of articles from Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. It uses {{cite encyclopedia}} in its implementation. It provides for links to the Wikisource project Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography, but also links to other sources (for example Google Books), or no link at all can be used.

Usage

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=name of the article}}

Other parameters

  |noicon       = 1 — remove the leading icon
  |vb = 1 — if text is copied from an Appletons' article this parameter
                      adds a prescript for article attribution (see the Plagiarism guideline)
  |inline = 1 — alter the prescript for use within inline citations.

Examples

Simple

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Clay, Henry}}

displays as:

Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Clay, Henry" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

Short

The short parameter hides some of the default values (the default values for editors, location and publisher)

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Clay, Henry|short=x}}

displays as:

"Clay, Henry" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. 1900.

With comment

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Clay, Henry}} A popular politician in the formative years of the United States.

displays as:

Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Clay, Henry" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton. A popular politician in the formative years of the United States.

Using author and year

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Clay, Henry|year=1900|author=[[Carl Schurz]]}}

displays as:

Carl Schurz (1900). "Clay, Henry" . In Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J. (eds.). Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

As an alternative first, last and authorlink can also be used. Up to three authors can be set using either author or first last pairs (see the documentation of {{cite encyclopedia}} for more details).

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Clay, Henry|year=1900|first=Carl |last=Schurz |authorlink=Carl Schurz}}

displays as:

Schurz, Carl (1900). "Clay, Henry" . In Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J. (eds.). Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

Using volume, pages, page

These work as with other {{cite xxx}} templates:

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Pulsifer, David|year=1900|pages=134-135|volume=5}}

displays as:

Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Pulsifer, David" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. Vol. 5. New York: D. Appleton. pp. 134–135.

Using display

The mechanics of Wikisource will sometimes require that a link have disambiguation information which is not part of the original title. The display parameter allows this information to be hidden for the purpose of the citation. For example:

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Brown, John (abolitionist)|year=1900|display=Brown, John, of Osawatomie, abolitionist}}

displays as:

Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Brown, John, of Osawatomie, abolitionist" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

Using title (no Wikisource link)

{{Cite Appletons'|title=Dana, Richard|year=1900}}

displays as:

 Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Dana, Richard". Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

When title is being used, url can be used to specify an external link. For example:

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">  Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1888). "Dana, Richard". Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton. At Google Books. </syntaxhighlight>

displays as:

 Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1888). "Dana, Richard". Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton. At Google Books.

Using noicon

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Kapp, Friedrich|year=1900|noicon=x}}

displays as:

Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Kapp, Friedrich". Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

Using vb

If text is incorporated verbatim into an article, the vb parameter can be used to tack on a notice appropriate to the policy in Wikipedia:Plagiarism.

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Pulaski, Kazimierz|year=1900|vb=x}}

displays as:

This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domain: Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Pulaski, Kazimierz" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

If vb but the citation is placed within a ref tag pair then inline can be used to modify the prescript:

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Pulaski, Kazimierz|year=1900|vb=x|inline=x}}

displays as:

One or more of the preceding sentences incorporates text from a publication now in the public domain: Wilson, J. G.; Fiske, J., eds. (1900). "Pulaski, Kazimierz" . Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography. New York: D. Appleton.

The first is set if the parameter vb=x is set (or the template {{Appletons'}} is used), otherwise the second category is set unless the parameter notaref=x is set.

{{Cite Appletons'|wstitle=Blenker, Louis|notaref=x}}

will not insert a category, though there will be no noticeable difference in the page. Examples of situations where use of these parameters should be made:

• vb=x is used to indicate that text has been copied verbatim from Appleton's Cyclopedia into a Wikipedia article.
• notaref=x can be used when the template is placed in the "External links" section and so is providing additional information and is not being used as a citation to support information in the Wikipedia article.
