Template:R from American English
When used inside the {{Redirect category shell}} template:
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
When used by itself:
- From American English: This is a redirect from a term in American English spelling to an alternative spelling variation. The spelling is given by the target of the redirect.
- This template populates a subcategory of Category:Redirects from alternative spellings, so {{R from alternative spelling}} should not be used with this template.
 | This template should not be substituted nor used to tag soft redirects. |
Usage
- This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from American spelling and, when the redirect is in main-article namespace (mainspace), Category:Unprintworthy redirects is also populated by default. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. American English redirects that are in mainspace are most often not included in a printed version. In other words they are usually unprintworthy. See below for how to tag those few anchor redirects that are printworthy.
 | Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia. |
- Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- REDIRECT (target page name)
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- Template {{Rcat shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- REDIRECT (target page name)
- From American English: This is a redirect from a term in American English spelling to an alternative spelling variation. The spelling is given by the target of the redirect.
- This template populates a subcategory of Category:Redirects from alternative spellings, so {{R from alternative spelling}} should not be used with this template.
</syntaxhighlight>
- This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
- Use this rcat to tag any redirect in any namespace from a title with a different correct spelling of the target.
- Do not use this rcat to tag a redirect from an incorrectly spelled title – misspelled redirects should be tagged with {{R from misspelling}} instead – such "typo" redirects are frequently good search terms.
- Pages that link to these redirects may be updated to link directly to the target pages if that results in an improvement of the text. Do not "fix" such links if they are not broken. In addition, these links should not be replaced with piped links.
Parameters
- The first unnamed parameter, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />
|1=: may be used to alter the text when the non-American spelling is of a name that is different from the target's title. It is used as follows:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- or the <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">1=</syntaxhighlight> may be omitted:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

|
</syntaxhighlight>
- The text will be changed from The prevalent spelling is given by the target of the redirect to The prevalent spelling is (other spelling).
- The second unnamed parameter, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />
|2=: by default, this template tags and categorizes redirects as unprintworthy. Use the second parameter to subdue this behavior and populate Category:Printworthy redirects in the following manner:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
|
</syntaxhighlight>
- or
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">

</syntaxhighlight>
- (leave first parameter "empty") or
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
- From American English: This is a redirect from a term in American English spelling to an alternative spelling variation. The spelling is given by the target of the redirect.
- This template populates a subcategory of Category:Redirects from alternative spellings, so {{R from alternative spelling}} should not be used with this template.
- From a printworthy page title: This is a redirect from a title that would be helpful in a printed or CD/DVD version of Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Printability and Version 1.0 Editorial Team for more information.
