This template should be used for the parameter <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|based_on= of templates such as {{Infobox film}}, {{Infobox television}}, {{Infobox opera}} and {{Infobox musical composition}}. It creates an automatic line break between the original work title and its creator(s). Multiple writers can be specified with an arbitrary number of additional parameters. <br /> was historically used for separating writers before support for multiple parameters was added. See Manual of Style (titles) for the proper way of displaying the title of the source material. Do not use this field where the source material is ambiguous, i.e. in cases of films that are not clearly or officially based on one original work.
This template may also be used for some other purposes. The aliases {{Work by author}} and {{Theme song}} may be used.
Usage
{{Based on|title of the original work|creator of the original work}}
Parameters
Most parameters do not need to be named. For example, {{Based on|Work|Author}} will render the same as {{Based on|1=Work|2=Author}}. The only exception is <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|indent=, which will not be applied by default.
| Parameter | Explanation |
|---|---|
| 1 | The name of the original work |
| 2, 3, 4... | The name(s) of the creator(s) of the original work |
| indent | Applies indentation to all creator(s) when set to affirmative (<syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">yes</syntaxhighlight>, <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">y</syntaxhighlight>, <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" style="" inline="1">1</syntaxhighlight>).
