Template:Cite Grove/doc

__EXPECTED_UNCONNECTED_PAGE__

This template provides a quick, standard method of citing The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd edition, 2001) and Grove Music Online for music-related articles in Wikipedia.

It is a wrapper around the standard citation template {{cite encyclopedia}}. As such it fills out some {{cite encyclopedia}} parameters, but the full range of parameters provided by WP:CS1 are available. To change the appearance of the output to that of {{citation}} use the parameter <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|mode=cs2.

Usage

All parameters apart from <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|title= are strictly speaking optional: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{cite Grove |title=Roméo et Juliette}}</syntaxhighlight>Sadie, Stanley; Tyrrell, John, eds. (2001). "Roméo et Juliette". The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd ed.). London: Macmillan. ISBN 978-1-56159-239-5.

However, it is strongly encouraged to include at least <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|last1=, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|first1=, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|date=, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|title=, and <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url= (or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi= or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id=). If the citation is to be used in an article via {{sfnp}} (or {{harvp}}, {{sfn}}, {{harvnb}}) the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|date= is essential, since these templates can't "see" through to this Grove template's publication date that is generated later.

If one of the link parameters (<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url=, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi= or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id=) is used, the template displays the title Grove Music Online (8th ed.) If no link parameter is provided, then it is assumed the citation is from the 2nd edition printed in 2001; the title is changed to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd ed.) and the editors are added. If this is the case, then the parameter <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|page=number ought to be provided.

The syntax with typical parameters is as follows: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{cite Grove

 |last1 = Huebner
 |first1 = Steven
 |date = 2002
 |title = Roméo et Juliette
 |url=https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.O006772
 |url-access=subscription

}}</syntaxhighlight>Huebner, Steven (2002). "Roméo et Juliette". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-1-56159-263-0. (subscription, Wikilibrary access, or UK public library membership required)

Example of one of Grove's free-access pages, with two authors, each of which has a Wikipedia article: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{Cite Grove

 |last1 = Wolff
 |first1 = Christoph
 |author-link1 = Christoph Wolff
 |last2 = Emery
 |first2 = Walter
 |author-link2 = Walter Emery
 |date = 20 January 2001
 |title = Bach, Johann Sebastian
 |url = https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.6002278195

}}</syntaxhighlight>Wolff, Christoph; Emery, Walter (20 January 2001). "Bach, Johann Sebastian". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-1-56159-263-0. (subscription, Wikilibrary access, or UK public library membership required)

Using <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi=: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{Cite Grove

 |last1 = Mace Christian, Angela
 |date = 28 November 2018
 |edition = on-line
 |title = Hensel [née Mendelssohn (-Bartholdy)], Fanny Cäcilie
 |doi = 10.1093/omo/9781561592630.013.3000000159

}}</syntaxhighlight>Mace Christian, Angela (28 November 2018). "Hensel [née Mendelssohn (-Bartholdy)], Fanny Cäcilie". Grove Music Online (on-line ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/omo/9781561592630.013.3000000159. ISBN 978-1-56159-263-0. (subscription, Wikilibrary access, or UK public library membership required) It is however discouraged, as in the last example above, to use the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|author= parameter when both last name(s) and given name(s) are known: use <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|last1= and <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|first1= instead. The above example also illustrates how to override the "8th" edition qualifier when the on-line version of the article does not correspond with the 2001 printed edition.

As an alternative to <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|url= and/or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|doi=, <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id= can be used (<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id= should contain the end part of the doi—after the last decimal point). <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">{{Cite Grove

 |last1 = Wolff
 |first1 = Christoph
 |author-link1 = Christoph Wolff
 |last2 = Emery
 |first2 = Walter
 |author-link2 = Walter Emery
 |date = 20 January 2001
 |title = Bach, Johann Sebastian
 |id = 6002278195

}}</syntaxhighlight>Wolff, Christoph; Emery, Walter (20 January 2001). "Bach, Johann Sebastian". Grove Music Online (8th ed.). Oxford University Press. doi:10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.6002278195. ISBN 978-1-56159-263-0. (subscription, Wikilibrary access, or UK public library membership required) The <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|id= parameter can not be used when the part of the doi identifier before the last decimal point is not "gmo/9781561592630.article"
