Template documentationviewedithistorypurge

This template may be placed at the top of a biographical article of someone with a Portuguese name to identify maternal and/or paternal surnames which make up the family name, as well as any generational title like "Filho".

Usage

Invocation

{{Portuguese name|MATERNAL|PATERNAL|SUFFIX}}
{{Portuguese name|1=MATERNAL|2=PATERNAL|3=SUFFIX}}
{{Portuguese name|first=MATERNAL|second=PATERNAL|suffix=SUFFIX}}

Parameters

• "1" or "first" – the first or maternal family name (optional, but usually present)
• "2" or "second" – the second or paternal family name (optional, but usually present)
• "3" or "suffix" – the generational suffix, if any (e.g., Filho, Júnior, Neto, Sobrinho, Segundo, Terceiro) (optional)

Note: Each parameter is optional, but a maintenance category will be added to articles that use this template without any parameters.

Examples

• For Daniel Alves da Silva: {{Portuguese name|Alves|Silva}} or {{Portuguese name|first=Alves|second=Silva}} →

In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Alves and the second or paternal family name is Silva.

• For Armando Monteiro Filho: {{Portuguese name|second=Monteiro|suffix=Filho}} →
  In this Portuguese name, the second or paternal family name is Monteiro. "Filho" is a generational suffix meaning "son", which is used for someone whose name is the same as their father, like "Jr." in English.
• For Armando de Queiroz Monteiro Filho: {{Portuguese name|first=Queiroz|second=Monteiro|suffix=Filho}} →
  In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Queiroz and the second or paternal family name is Monteiro. "Filho" is a generational suffix meaning "son", which is used for someone whose name is the same as their father, like "Jr." in English.
• For Edmundo Alves de Souza Neto: {{Portuguese name|first=Alves|second=Souza|suffix=Neto}} →
  In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Alves and the second or paternal family name is Souza. "Neto" is a generational suffix meaning "grandson", which is used for someone whose name is the same as their father and grandfather, like "III" in English.
• For Eduardo Jorge Martins Alves Sobrinho: {{Portuguese name|Martins|Alves|suffix=Sobrinho}} →
  In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Martins and the second or paternal family name is Alves. "Sobrinho" is a generational suffix meaning "nephew".

Usage note: In Portuguese names, Filho, if it appears, is usually a generational suffix meaning "Junior", and is not a family name, so it should be placed in the optional <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|suffix= parameter. Rarely, Filho is the family name; in this case, it would be in the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|first= or <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|second= parameter, and the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|suffix= parameter should be omitted. The same applies to Neto or Sobrinho which can be either a suffix (usually) or a family name (rarely). If you are not sure if something is a generational suffix or not, do not use the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|suffix= parameter.
