Moved – merger complete

File:Purple arrow down.svg Moved from Template talk:Module rating#Merge complete

Hi all, merger of Template:Template rating and Template:Module rating is  complete at Template:Template rating/sandbox.

See the diff of the merger. See the diff of the improvements I made to the text to be a little clearer and make the error text friendlier.

I did check all use-cases, however I'd appreciate if someone could take another look. If you're happy, could someone merge the changes into Template:Template rating as I don't have the template editor right? (@Izno @Awesome Aasim @WikiCleanerMan Pinging those from merger discussion). Thanks – waddie96 ★ (talk) 11:36, 1 September 2025 (UTC) (move discussion)

Oh wait nevermind it ain't template-protected. waddie96 ★ (talk) 12:01, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
It appears that the /sandbox adds some new parameters (e.g. <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|2= and <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|3=) that are not in the existing template. If so, those new parameters should be tested on the /testcases page, as I have asked you to do multiple times. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:03, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
Hi. The parameters actually come from {{Module rating}}. And I tested them on the /doc page using {{\sandbox}} and live pages using the “Preview page with this template” feature on all use-cases. The doc page on the module version is actually incorrect, it appears it doesn’t have as detailed implementation of the {{pp}} template as it describes in the docs, it basically is a ‘double tunnel’ actually bad template usage, that runs the module eventually for page protection and passes the parameter for protection level. Unless the module truly can get the 2nd and 3rd unnamed parameter ‘passed through’ another template (ie {{pp}}) ‘to it’. But I didn’t find a use case that applied all three protection parameters… but must admit I didn’t look hard. It’s actually on my todo list I see. Right at the top. waddie96 ★ (talk) 20:23, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
Is anyone able to enact this edit? waddie96 ★ (talk) 21:07, 4 September 2025 (UTC)

Protected rating gone

FYI waddie96 your recent changes to {{Template rating}} removed support for <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|1=protected. For an example see Module:Check for deprecated parameters where an error message is being displayed. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 07:58, 9 September 2025 (UTC)

Yes I know, because the template:template rating/protected automatically gives a protected box. waddie96 ★ (talk) 07:59, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
So are you planning to clean up all the pages where the template is displaying an error message? —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:01, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
I did search for this with a temp tracking category but clearly didn't wait long enough for it to populate. Lemme add parameters for it to show nothing instead of the error, can't we just give those templates/modules ratings? waddie96 ★ (talk) 08:01, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
I have no problem giving the module a rating but what was previously working should not now show an error message due to changes you have made to the template… —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:02, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
If you want to create a tracking category for those that are currently saying protected, {{ping}} me with the cat and I’ll watch it and give ratings. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:05, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
sure waddie96 ★ (talk) 08:05, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
Yeh get you, as I said above temp tracking cat didn't pick any up. Small mistake, let me add module:check for unknown parameters, ill fix them waddie96 ★ (talk) 08:05, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
Good deal. Let me know if I can help. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:07, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
Hmmm @Zackmann08: the unknown para is populated by Module:Check for unknown parameters and also if <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|1= doesn't match any, but it's quite a lot, 192. Now some are there because they do not contain any parameters. I can add protection back whereby it shows the notice it showed before or it just shows Tm:Template rating/protected? See Category:Pages using template rating template with unknown parameters waddie96 ★ (talk) 08:49, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
btw do you know where the lint errors are coming from? see lint error special page. Thanks waddie96 ★ (talk) 08:50, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
Sadly I’m no help when it comes to lint errors. I don’t understand them. Just not something I’ve ever taken the time to learn. Sorry. My advise would be to change the switch statements so that protected is treated just like release. After all, if it is protected, it is because it is widely used. Otherwise you need to display a different message for protected. Something like “this module is protected but may not be ready for release. Please specify a better rating. Regardless make sure you update the documentation because it currently shows protected as still being a valid value. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:58, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
yeh fair point, i'll add it back waddie96 ★ (talk) 09:11, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
Sounds good. —Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 09:11, 9 September 2025 (UTC)

@Waddie96: The recent changes have caused a bunch of /doc pages and their transcluding page (e.g. Module:Excerpt/config/sandbox) to start emitting this tracking category. Not an urgent issue so the change doesn't need hard reverting, but this should preferably be fixed. Aidan9382 (talk) 09:29, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

I'll look into it thank you waddie96 ★ (talk) 10:16, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Template protection request

@Isabelle Belato Good day :), I see you protected the template with the edit summary that it was requested at WP:RFPP, but I don't see a request there or in its archives? waddie96 ★ (talk) 16:23, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Hi Waddie96. For some reason the request was not archived properly, but the diff with protection should be here. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 16:27, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 11 October 2025

Script error: No such module "protected edit request". Please implement my changes in the sandbox.

These changes unify the rating experience for templates and modules. It also allows for proper categorization of deprecated templates and modules (as well as templates for general use, which previously the category was soft deleted per CfD, but actually would be helpful for certain kinds of more complicated technical templates). One thing I forgot:
For deprecated templates/modules, please make the thing categorize Category:Deprecated (templates/modules) rather than unstable. Aasim (話す(はなす)) 05:09, 20 October 2025 (UTC)

Also I made a change to one of the calls to invoke a named parameter in the effective protection level module, otherwise for rare cases such as a template called {{foo=bar}}, it would instead of passing the page into the required first parameter it would pass "bar" into the parameter "foo". Invalid rating value and nocat but still categorized

The documentation page is not showing an example where an invalid rating is given. When I add one (in preview) but also set <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|nocat=true, the documentation page then gets added to Category:Pages using template rating template with unknown parameters, ignoring <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|nocat=true. The template is not checking the <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext" inline style="display: none;" />|nocat= in the default value of the switch. I notice the testcases also are getting put into the category even though nocat=true is being used. Is this the intended behavior? If so, the documentation needs to be updated to reflect that. RedWolf (talk) 00:16, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

The editor who made all of these changes without adequate testing is gone, but not before they made a big mess of many pages, including the template in question. I have edited the testcases page a bit and modified the template to output a new error category that does not misuse the unknown parameters category. More work may be needed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:00, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
